Airport Information
Aug 7th, 2008 | Category: Travelling to Sri LankaSri Lanka’s only international airport is located at Katunayake, 30 km north of Colombo. It has modern facilities including duty free shops on arrival. Major banks are represented by branches in the Arrival Hall, offering a good rate of exchange and there is an ATM which accepts most cards. The tourist information counter has limited information although it is worth picking up copies of Travel Lanka and the Sri Lanka Tourist board Accommodation Guide.
Pre-paid taxi stand, several hotel and tour company booths can be found after the Arrival hall. Porters are easily accessible to transport your luggage with a price of Rs 30 per item. Alternatively, the trolleys are free.
Stringent baggage and personal security checks are often carried out, especially on departure, so be prepared to repack your bags.
Visitors to Departures or Arrivals must purchase an entrance permit for Rs 130 at the special booths before entering the terminal.
It is highly recommended for you to book a hotel or guesthouse, if you are going to arrive late – after 12 am. The hotel will arrange a pick-up upon request. For your safety, avoid accommodation touts. At the airport, bank exchange counters and taxis operate 24 hours, though public transport does not.
